Last time, I shared a story from the hadith about the three men who were trapped in a cave, but Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala saved them because they made du’a to Allah by virtue of an excellent good deed they did sincerely because of Allah.

Today I want to share with you another story of one of those men. In Sahih Al-Bukhari, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Then the third man said: ‘O Allah! I employed a few laborers, and I paid them their wages with the exception of one man who did not take his wages and went away. I invested his wages, and I got so much property by it. (Then after some time) he came and said to me: ‘O servant of Allah! Pay me my wages.’ I said to him: ‘All the camels, cows, sheep, and servants you see, are yours.’ He said: ‘O servant of Allah! Do not mock me.’ I said: ‘I am not mocking at you.’ So, he took all the herd and drove them away and left nothing. O Allah! If I did that for Your Sake only, please relieve us from the present suffering.”

Perhaps this part of the hadith feels irrelevant to us, because it seems only applicable to businesses or rich people, right? No, we can apply this lesson in our lives as well!

– When someone lends us his pen – return it.
– When someone lends us her book – return it.
– When someone lends us their cooking / gardening utensils – wash and return them.
– When someone lends us even a small amount of money – 10 cents, 5 cents, even 1 cent – return them just the same.

These things may seem insignificant, but they are all amanah that we need to take care of. And above it all, Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala knows, so do not ‘conveniently’ forget about our promises. Every single little thing that we do is on our record and will be brought forth on the Day of Judgment.

Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says in the Qur’an:

“O believers! Do not betray Allah and the Messenger, nor knowingly betray your Amanat (things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you)”. [Surah Al-Anfal 8 : 27]
