📚 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “… a person is tested according to their level of commitment to their religion. If they had a strong commitment and belief, then their tests will increase. And if their commitment was weak, then their tests would decrease. The tests and trials continue to fall upon a person until they reach a point where they walk on earth without a single sin (they all get erased)”. [Ahmad]
.
We will be tested according to our commitment to the Deen. When we are truly committed to the Deen, the test increases. But if we are weak in our iman, then Allah will not test us as much.
.
📚 Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also said: “On the Day of Judgement, when the people who have suffered affliction (in this world) are given their rewards, the people who were healthy (in life), will wish that their skins had been cut off with scissors while they were in the world.” [At-Tirmidhi 2402]
.
On the Day of Judgement, the people who hardly experience any hardship, whose life was easy and went smoothly, will see the immense rewards given to the ones who did face hardships, who were tested with calamities, sicknesses, death of their loved ones, and all sorts of difficulties; and they will wish not to face what these people had faced, but much worse than that – even for their skins to be cut with scissors. Why? Because of the immense reward due to being patient when facing trials.
.
This is not to say that we should ask for hardship from Allah – no, this is not the mentality of a Muslim. But this hadith is a glad tiding for those who have faced so much hardships in life, but still bear them with patience. This is the main point of the hadith.
.
So when Allah tests us, do not have bad thoughts of Him. Perhaps the test is a means to expiate our sins, or a means for us to be rewarded immensely on the Day of Judgment.
Always have good thoughts of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala.
