Brothers & sisters in Islam, how often do we find ourselves doing this:
looking at something that we shouldn’t be looking at,
saying a word that we’re not supposed to say,
hearing something that we shouldn’t be hearing,
and we kept going & going & doing the same thing until we were flooded with sins & drowned in those sins. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to always be aware from falling into sins & to not belittle any of them.
.
🔵 He ﷺ said: ❝A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain which, he is afraid, may fall on him; whereas the wicked person considers his sins as flies passing over his nose and he just drives them away.❞ [Sahih Al-Bukhari 6308]
This was how the companions were & how a believer should be. He’s afraid of the consequences of his sins, as if a gigantic mountain is going to collapse over him. To illustrate how fearful the companions were of sins, look at the following statement by Anas ibn Malik.
.
Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, was one of the last companions to pass away. The next generation that came after the companions was the tabi’in & they were a wonderful, pious generation that was praised by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. However, observe what Anas ibn Malik said to the tabi’in:
🔵 ❝You people do deeds (i.e. sins) which seem in your eyes as thinner than hair (i.e. harmless), while we used to consider those (same deeds) during the lifetime of the Prophet as destructive sins.❞ [Sahih Al-Bukhari 6492]
.
This was how the companions behaved towards sins. They were terrified of them regardless how small that sin was, because they were terrified of Allah’s Punishment.
.
🔵 Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says: ❝…They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them…❞ [At-Tawbah 9 :67]
Meaning, there are those who disrespect Allah, because He meant nothing to them; and as a result, they meant nothing back to Allah. They will receive no rahmah from Allah.
.
Brothers & sisters, this is a reminder to us all. Come back to Allah. Drain our sins by repenting to Him & know that He is The Most Forgiving, The Most Merciful.
May Allah protect us from His Anger and His Punishment, and forgive all of our sins. Ameen.
