Do you know that one of the reasons why Allah subhana wa ta’ala sent Messengers is so that people maintain all affairs in justice?
“Indeed, We sent Our Messengers with clear proofs, and revealed with them the Holy Book, and the balance (of truth & justice) so that mankind may maintain [their affairs] in justice, and live a fair and just life.” [Al-Hadid 57 : 25]
Allah also says in the Qur’an: “O believers! Stand firm for justice as witnesses for Allah even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or close relatives…” [An-Nisaa’ 4 : 135]
Establish justice – even if us being fair can backfire against ourselves, our parents, and close relatives.
If we are wrong, say we are wrong.
If we made a mistake, say: Yes, I made a mistake.
If we get caught cutting a red light, say: Yes, I did cut a red light.
There is no sugar coating it. Justice is justice.
Being fair and just must also be applied even in the smallest of deeds, deeds that people might see them as trivial. Consider this hadith where An-Nu’man bin Bashir said:
“My father gave me a gift, but ‘Amra bint Rawaha (my mother) said that she would not agree to it unless he made Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as a witness to it.
So my father went to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said: ‘I have given a gift to my son from ‘Amra bint Rawaha, but she ordered me to make you as a witness to it, o Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ).’
The Prophet (ﷺ) asked: ‘Have you given to all your children something similar?’
He replied, no.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Fear Allah, and be just to your children.’
My father then returned and took back his gift.” [Sahih Al-Bukhari 2587]
Subhana Allah! Even giving gifts to our children must be done in justice. Of course we’re not going to give our 18 year old children the same gifts we give to our 2 year old. But it’s about, for example, buying souvenirs and gifts for everyone when we return from travelling. Be fair to everyone.
May Allah make us people who are fair and uphold justice, ameen.
