Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ❝Whoever takes the money of the people with the intention of repaying it, Allah will repay it on his behalf; and whoever takes it in order to destroy it, then Allah will destroy him.❞ [Sahih Al-Bukhari 2387] .
Meaning, whoever borrows the wealth from the people – like a loan or borrowing an item – and has the sincere, truthful intention to repay the money or return the item that he borrows, and he works hard to repay / return it, then Allah will help him pay the debt. Allah will make it easy for him to return it. And if the debtor, after trying so hard and taking many necessary steps to return the money or property, passes away before he could do so, Allah will take care of him as well as the lender. Allah will take care of both of them. This is a promise from Allah.
.
But whoever takes people’s wealth or property, and he has already made up his mind that he’s not going to return it ever, then Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala will ruin him. Allah will destroy him. And he will never find any benefit in this world from the money or the item that he took, in addition to the punishment that awaits him in the Hereafter.
.
It doesn’t matter if the person whom we borrow from is a wealthy person. It doesn’t matter if the person has an abundance of wealth and property. It doesn’t matter if the lender has forgotten about what we owe. Return their rights regardless. Have taqwa of Allah, o brothers and sisters!
.
And this is also very important : Always make a written contract between us and the lender when we borrow something – even if the lender is a family member – so that all parties can be faithful to it. Otherwise, the devils will incite evil in ourselves, and we will find ourselves giving so many excuses: “No, I didn’t borrow from you” or “No, you’re mistaken” or “No, it wasn’t me” and so on.
.
Remember this hadith whenever we borrow something from someone so that we hold ourselves accountable. May Allah make us people of taqwa, and faithful to our contracts and promises. Ameen.
