I want to impart 3 advice for all of us whenever we see someone mocking, belittling, or calling others with bad nicknames:
(1) We need to stop it from happening, regardless whether it is done by an adult (eg. a parent towards his/her child) or by someone younger. Advise the doer in a respectful manner. Remember that these actions are acts of oppression (refer Surah Al-Hujurat 49 : 11). So if we don’t do anything about it whenever it happens in our presence, Allah may question us on the Day of Judgment. May Allah make us confident Muslims who are courageous to rectify what is wrong.
(2) Don’t just limit our good character by stopping ourselves from mocking and belittling people, but ensure that when we speak, we speak in an excellent manner. Aim for a higher goal! Our speech and character should benefit others. So be merciful in a way that people do not fear the harm of our speech and bad akhlaaq.
(3) And lastly, always remember this: United we stand, divided we fall. Shaytan will always try to cause dissension, make us hate and look down on one another. So whenever we feel we want to lash out with words of anger, seek Allah’s protection from shaytan’s influence upon us.
May Allah grant us beautiful character.
